Peekskill Celebrates with Dragon Boat Races

With a couple of weeks before the annual Peekskill Celebration draws near, preparation and practice has begun for one of the more popular events in recent years at the Peekskill Celebration.

Dragon Boat Racing, which can be seen from the Riverfront Green on August 6th, is a competition that features teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer that keeps the team in rhythm and as you guessed it, the boats are adorned with a dragon head at the bow.

One of the more local oriented groups is Fred's Fearless Dragons, a team representing Fred's Food Pantry - the Peekskill based food pantry is program run by Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill (CHOP). In an effort to bring together the community, the team consists of volunteers and board members of CHOP and even includes former residents of Jan Peek House Shelter.

"Hunger is increasing at an alarming rate, in fact 1 in 8 Americans today are hungry," said Jeanne Blum, Executive Director of CHOP. "In the county, the hunger issue has really been increasing enormously."
