Season in Review: Hen Hud Girls Lacrosse

Sailors enjoy historic season under Panas grad Montesarchio.

It was an historic season for Hendrick Hudson (11-7) as it won its first ever sectional game, a 15-7 triumph against Ossining.

Hen Hud first-year coach Mary Montesarchio, a former Lakeland/Panas honorable mention All-American player, an ’05 Panas graduate, and Sacred Heart standout, said it was the players’ dedication that led to the success the team had.

“It was good to see for them that hard work pays off,” Montesarchio said. “Now we’ll just try to come back for next year and work even harder, try to get to the sectional final game.”

Leading the way in goal was all-section senior Kelsey Rosenblum.

“She had a lot of experience on varsity,” Montesarchio said. “She was a four-year varsity starter. She was just the best player on the defense. She’s good at communicating. She knows her strengths, she knows her weaknesses. She is just an all-around good goalie.”

Earning all-section honorable mention honors was sophomore attack wing Kennedy Sherman, who was the Sailor’s strongest finisher.

“Whenever we needed a goal, we wanted the ball on her stick,” Montesarchio said. “She has a great shot. She is getting close to 100 career goals and she had in the neighborhood of 70 points. She is a great asset to our attack.”

All-league awards for the Sailors went to sophomores, center Angela Marriott, midfielder Bailey Stewart and defender Lindsey Luposello.

Montesarchio said this was a very dedicated group of players.

“Bailey stepped up when we needed someone to score goals, it was her first year on varsity and she had about 30 goals,” Montesarchio said. “Angela just controls the ball, controls the game, she is very fast. She can run forever. She is very confident. And Lindsey is just one of our best defenders on the team. She is a great leader on defense. She has great footwork and great speed.”

All-league honorable mention for the Sailors was junior Alexa Richardson and sophomore Alexa Seger. Montesarchio said that Richardson demonstrated great leadership and defensive ability one on one while Seger was good at picking up groundballs and was tough on the draw.
