For host No. 11 Hendrick Hudson (10-9), the chance to play for a sectional crown has been a long time coming but it earned the right to do just that Thursday afternoon after defeating No. 18 Pleasantville 14-7 in the Section 1 Class C semifinals at Irwin J. Mayer Memorial Field

The Sailors will now face defending Class C champion and No. 1 seed Bronxville in the title game at 3 p.m. Wednesday at White Plains High School.

It's the first title-game appearance for the Sailors since they lost to John Jay in a Class B title contest in 2004 after they had beaten Somers in the semifinals.

The Sailors also appeared in four straight Class C title games from 2000-03, losing to Somers each time.

What makes things extra interesting is that they are facing a Bronxville team coached by Hen Hud graduates Tim Horgan, who is their head coach, and Todd Horgan, an assistant.

“It’s going to be exciting and fun," Hen Hud coach Craig Solomon said. "They have a great team, they have done a great job with their program. I enjoyed coaching them and it’s fun watching kids that were part of your life grow up and be successful, so you take pride in the people they have become. It will be exciting.”

The Sailors garnered the momentum against Pleasantville (6-14) as they broke a 2-2 tie with two goals in the last 1:38 of the second quarter. Scoring those goals were face-off standout Matt Ledwin, who won 24 out of 25 faceoffs, and Jake Koch.

“Anytime you can get momentum running into the second half is huge and then our face-off guy (Ledwin), when you play from the lead, it’s such a comfort knowing that even if they score, we are going to get the ball on the next possession so when we are playing from in front, it’s just very comfortable," Solomon said. "Those two goals changed the momentum. The kids came out really hard in the second half and stretched the lead out.”

What kept the score tied at 2-2 before the Sailors could break it open was the outstanding play in goal by Sailor goalie Eddie Gilman, whose lightning quick reflexes frustrated the Pleasantville attack with one save after another.

"Their goalie came up big in that first half," Pleasantville coach Chris Kear said. "We had flurries, especially in that second quarter where we thought we had some great scoring chances and we didn’t put it past him. We played against him before and he brought his A game, so credit to him.”

The championship was the first in North Rockland history while the loss ended a string of five straight titles for the Rebels.
