No. 2 Peekskill and No. 18 John Jay hooked up in an opening round Section 1 Class A playoff contest Feb. 17.

The seeds suggested that the game should be an easy Peekskill win but it was anything but. Instead for three plus quarters it felt like one of those NCAA tournament games where the high seed is fightning for its dear life.

In the end host Peekskill won 75-64 but anyone in the John Devins Gymanasium that night realized that score was as deceiving as a score could be.

Peekskill actually led just by two, 64-62, late in the game before closing the contest out with an 11-2 run. That run was ignited by Musheed Muhammed (nine points), whose field goal and foul shot put Peekskill up by five, causing the SRO crowd in Peekskill to explode.

John Jay's Matt Ferentini, who tallied 19 points, then shot what looked like a dead on three from the corner but it just missed with Muhammed grabbing the rebound.

Peekskill's Chandler Pierce, who also registered 19 points, then converted two free throws. Brad Goldman, who had a game-high 21 points for John Jay, pulled the Indians to within five with a deuce but Pierce then made two more foul shots to seal the game.

Bayron Carter also was in double digits for Peekskill, scoring 11 points.

The Red Devils will now host No. 10 Brewster Wednesday, Feb. 22 in the quarterfinals at a time to be announced.

The winners of each quarterfinal contest will advance to the Section 1 Final Four at the Westchester County Center in White Plains Feb. 27-March 4.

Girls sectional hoops

Peekskill and John Jay entered their Section 1 Class A opening round playoff contest Feb. 17 in Peekskill as even as two teams could be, with Peekskill seeded No. 8 and John Jay No. 9.

The game featured two of the best players in Section 1 history in guards, John Jay's Raegan Knox, who is the school's all-time leading scorer in hoops, boys or girls, and Peekskill's all-state guard Asia Jackson, who led the Red Devils to a state crown last year.

This year the Red Devils' postseason would turn out differently as led by a game-high 24 points from Knox, including 19 in the second half, John Jay defeated Peekskill 47-38.

Leading Peekskill was Lanay Rodney, who tallied 12 points.

John Jay will now play at No. 1 Pearl River 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22 in the quarterfinals.
