It's always nice to get a win on the home floor, especially when one of your proud graduates is in the house.

That grad was Derek Dennis, who came home after playing for the Temple University football squad which won its first bowl game since 1979.

At , Dennis was known more for basketball, as he was an integral part of two Class A state championship basketball squads in 2005 and '06.

Dennis came back to his alma mater to watch it beat Woodlands 65-57 in a Dec. 21 varsity boys basketball contest.

Chandler Pierce led the way with 22 points with teammate Kyree Hull contributing nine for the Red Devils.

The game was also special because it marked the return of former Poughkeepsie coach Bob Murphy, who is now the Woodlands coach, to the John Devins Gymanasium.

Back in the day while coaching the Pioneers, Murphy battled Peekskill coach Lou Panzanaro in some classic games and it was great to see two of the legendary coaches in Section 1 go ahead to ahead again.

The two schools also played a JV game with Woodlands winning 55-54.

Morgan Jackson led Peekskill with 15 points and teammate Estevan Retamar tallied 13.

Panas girls duo recognized

We thank Walter Panas Athletic Director Kyle Pierce for the below information:

Walter Panas girls hoop players Christine Myers and Heather Kelly were vital in the team's placement as a finalist in the Walter Panas Holiday Tournament, which concluded Dec. 17, and were honored for their efforts as all-tournament selections.
