VOIP 'Fingerprints' Led to Arrest in Lakeland, Panas Bomb Threats

Voice-over-IP cellular devices leave electronic fingerprints and police investigating the incident used them to identify the kid who called in the bomb threats.

Yorktown police reported details of the arrest of a 14-year-old in connection with bomb threats phoned in to Lakeland High School and Walter Panas High School March 31.

His name is being withheld because he was charged, as a juvenile, with two counts of juvenile delinquency. If he had been an adult, he would have faced felony charges of falsely reporting an incident, police said.

Police said multiple subpoenas were endorsed by Yorktown town justices Lagonia and Roniolo ordering the release of phone records, IP address, cellular activity and electronic applications from various companies. Detectives were able to piece together an electronic fingerprint of threatening communications left by the suspect.
