2 Arrests Made in Murder Probe [UPDATE]

Peekskill police have scheduled a press conference at 11 a.m. today to discuss the arrests.

Update, Oct. 5, 9:25 p.m.:

The following statement was released by Peekskill city police this morning:

City of Peekskill Police have arrested two in the murder of 53 year old Terry Camper.  Details of the arrest will be released at Police HQ at 11AM this morning.   Investigators from the City of Peekskill were assisted in the case by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, The City of Newburgh Police Department, and New York State Crime Stoppers in what was a team effort.

Peekskill police said Terry Camper’s routine Wednesday wasn’t pretty much the same as it had always been in the moments leading up to his death.

“We believe Mr. Camper was doing what he usually did on a daily basis,” Peekskill police Lt. Eric Johansen said. “He was operating as a cab driver. Whether that had something to do with this case remains a very active, fluid part of this investigation.”

Camper, 53, Peekskill was found dead Wednesday afternoon by a postal worker who found him slumped inside his car with a gunshot wound, just outside of 118 Pine Street. Peekskill city police were alerted at about 2:20 p.m.  Camper, who was an unlicensed taxi driver, was described as a well known and liked member of the community.

Police aren't saying if they think Camper was robbed, but they do believe the incident was planned.

Camper worked as a licensed taxi driver in the city in the past. Although he was no longer licensed, he would still take on fares according to Johansen.

Police spent about four hours at the crime scene Wednesday, processing evidence and searching the area with police dogs from the Westchester County Police Department.

No arrests have been made and Johansen did not say if police have named any suspects Thursday.

“We’re following up on numerous leads and the case is very ‘hot’ at this point,” Johansen said. “I can say that we’re moving in the right direction and while an arrest may not be imminent, we do feel that this case will end with justice being served on the behalf of Mr. Camper.”

A reward of up to $2,500 has been offered by the New York State Crime Stoppers for  information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the man’s death.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-TIPS or the City of Peekskill Police Department at 914-737-8000.
