Peekskill firefighters said today's fire on 219 North Broad Steet orginated on the porch of the three-story home, before making its way up to the second floor.
Officials from the American Red Cross initially reported that they were five families in the building, but Peekskill fire Chief Robert Fiorio says there were six families living inside the home. All of the building's residents evacuated before firefighters arrived at the scene.
No injuries were reported.
Five professional and 30 volunteer firefighters responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Peekskill firefighters received assistance from the Buchanan, Continental Village and Mohegan fire departments.
Although firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading past the second floor, the building is currently uninhabitable, according to Fiorio. It was unclear how many of the building's residents needed assistance finding shelter.
