Croton Funny Bone Puzzles Officials

Croton police and even the County Medical Examiner's office were slightly stumped by a mysterious piece of debris that was found just south of the 9-11 Memorial at Croton Landing.

A resident of Ossining reported to police on October 2 just before 4 p.m. coming upon what looked to be a human femur bone some yards south of the monument, exposed on the shoreline at low tide.

Sgt. John Nikitopoulos said he went to recover it and "it really did look like a human bone." However, it felt more like wood. "I believed it be driftwood."

The Medical Examiner was unable to examine the find that night but Nikitopoulos brought the specimen to their office. Here he said "they were unsure at first" as well. "It threw them off too."

The ME reported back the next day that this was indeed driftwood, and that even if had been a bone it was too big to be human. "The circumference was too big," Nikitopoulos said.
