PHS Foreign Language Department Recognized by Governor Cuomo

Last month Peekskill High School’s Foreign Language Department held their 9th Annual National Foreign Language Week. As part the celebration the department showed foreign films, held dance workshops and hosted a food festival.

Recently the school received a Proclamation from Governor Cuomo which recognized PHS for its observance of Foreign Language Week and for highlighting “the benefits of programs that encourage American youth to broaden their horizons and scope of knowledge by learning a second language.”

“During the week students also recited the Pledge of Allegiance in different languages each morning and wrote poems about the week’s theme,” said Jennifer Michel, a teacher at Peekskill High School.  “The students also made some nice posters. Everyone really enjoyed the celebrations and learning about different cultures.”

Students agreed that learning about different cultures was a rewarding experience and that the week-long celebration was a nice addition to their regular curriculum.

“The food festival is always fun because we get to taste food from so many different countries,” said PHS student Kiara Navarro. “I loved going to the dance class this year because we danced to Spanish music. I am Hispanic and it was just so much fun dancing with everyone to Spanish music. Personally, I enjoy Foreign Language week because of all the cultures we get to see.”
