Peekskill's Top Students Announced in "You be the Chemist" Challenge

Peekskill students at Hillcrest Elementary School and Peekskill Middle School spent weeks preparing for the chance to compete against other local chemist-wannabes in the state level competition coming up on April 26 in Tarrytown, New York. After taking the qualifying test last month, each school's top scoring students were recently announced.

The You Be The Chemist (YBTC) Challenge is an interactive academic competition sponsored by the Chemical Education Foundation. The competition encourages students in grades 5-8 to engage in learning about important chemistry concepts, scientific discoveries, and laboratory safety while working with their peers and their community.

The YBTC Challenge is organized into three competitive levels: local, state, and national. Local Challenges take place in communities nationwide through the collaborative efforts of industry, educators, and other community volunteers. Local Challenge winners move on to participate in State Challenges, and State Challenge winners compete against one another at the National Challenge, organized by CEF. Local and state competitions take place throughout the school year, and the cycle ends with the national competition in June.
