Letter to Editor: Sierra Club Supports Galef for Assembly

Editor's Note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by George Klein, chairman of the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group. If you'd like to send your letters to the editor, email Rasheed.Oluwa@patch.com.

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Assemblywoman Sandy Galef, a dedicated advocate for the environment in New York State. With Sandy’s legislative record, there is no doubt that she is an environmental champion for our district and our state as a whole.

Sandy co-sponsored the Sewage Pollution Right to Know Act, which was signed by Governor Cuomo and will increase public notice about sewage discharges into waters where people swim and boat. We all saw earlier this year when sewage spilled into the Hudson River from a location in Tarrytown, just how important prompt notification really is.

Sandy voted for legislation, which has passed both legislative houses, to make sure that unredeemed container deposits are credited to New York’s Environmental Protection Fund.

Sandy was also a strong supporter of maintaining the Environmental Protection Fund monies in this year’s New York State Budget.  And Sandy called for a moratorium on hydrofracking.

Sandy’s enthusiastic support for the environment has been recognized by statewide environmental advocacy groups, including one that I lead—the Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group, representing members in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland. She also is endorsed by the New York League of Conservation Voters. She received a 2012 score of 91 from the Environmental Advocates of New York (the average score for an Assembly member this year was only 75). This is based on her voting record on legislation that supports our environment.

Sandy Galef is, without a doubt, a champion for the environment.  I hope you will join me on November 6th and vote for Sandy for New York State Assembly.

Sincerely,
George Klein
Chair, Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group
