Force-feeding

For a nation that is force-fed almost everything from news to wars, diets and political foibles, we find ourselves in the uncomfortable situation of force-feeding people who would rather die of their own volition. Of course I'm talking about the prisoners, so-called enemy combatants, stuck in Guantanamo, Cuba. They are being kept alive, despite their hunger-strike efforts, by the American Christian ethic that refuses to allow anyone the right to die on their own.
They have been called enemy combatants by our military court's system. They are being detained without due-process, or promise of a trial. The U.S. has two choices: deportation to the country of their origin, or be tried and sentenced. The government wants to do neither one of those options. The detainees would rather die of willful starvation rather than stay in the limbo of Guantanamo without a trial. Most were plucked off of streets in combatant countries all over the Middle East, some were "rendered" from European capitals, CIA covert operations, a holdover measure from the Bush administration.

Why can't we solve two problems by letting them have their wish: a death of their own design. They are prisoners for a reason. They have, if anything, hardened their posture against the U.S., capitalism, freedom, democracy, you-name-it! Released to their former countries, we will face them again in other terrorist actions or other wars, or somewhere in their own jihads. In some cases Americans have already lost lives because of some of these detainees. Should we risk losing more lives to the same people we once imprisoned? We do it all the time with our domestic prison population, but that's another story.

Obama must force-feed this congress on the closing of Guantanamo. Is he serious? Will Guantanamo prisoners finally get their trials? Or just more needles filled with nutrition? Our military stands squarely in the road to progress, and no one can force-feed them anything.
