Bee's Talk

Latest ‘Buzz About Bees’ at Van Cortlandtville Historical

“The Latest Buzz About Bees: An Update on CCD” will be the topic of a talk by George Kummer of Cortlandt on Saturday, February 19th, at 2 p.m. at The Little Red Schoolhouse, 297 Locust Ave., Cortlandt Manor, New York. Sponsored by The Van Cortlandtville Historical Society, of which Mr. Kummer is a past president, the two-hour program is open free to the public.

A beekeeper since 1975 and owner of Hemlock Hills Apiary in the northern part of Cortlandt, Mr. Kummer will present an update on Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and report on progress in solving this major problem that has been plaguing honey bees in recent years. Over the years he has completed basic and advanced classes in beekeeping, including a program in Apiculture at the Department of Entomology at Cornell University. He received his Master in Beekeepers from the Eastern Apicultural Society and enjoys teaching young beekeepers the art of beekeeping and sharing his knowledge with many different organizations.

On warm August weekends he spends time on Constitution Island in the Hudson River off Philipstown displaying his beekeeping equipment and selling his bee products. He and his wife, Sigrid, are
longtime residents of Cortlandt Manor.

The Little Red Schoolhouse is located at the north end of Locust Avenue next to Old St. Peter’s Church and cemetery just south of Oregon Road in Cortlandt. For more information about the February 19th program, email society@vancort.net or visit the website: www.vancort.net.
