The City of Peekskill Appoints Vivian Cyndi McKenzie to Vacant Seat on Common Council

City of Peekskill officials this week approved the appointment of Vivian Cyndi McKenzie to the council seat vacated by Donald Bennett, Jr., who resigned on September 3, 2013. Her term expires at midnight on Nov. 5 when a successor selected by voters in a special election will take office and serve the remainder of Bennett’s term, through December 31, 2015, in accordance with the city charter.

"I'm honored to be appointed to serve the people of this great city and I look forward to working hard for all of Peekskill," said Councilwoman McKenzie, a Democrat.

Vivian McKenzie is the owner of Kathleen’s Tea Room at 979 Main Street in downtown Peekskill. She graduated from Peekskill City Schools and received a B.S. in Management from the State University of New York at Binghamton and spent 27 years in the insurance industry as with corporations including Hanover Insurance, GMAC and Allstate.

An active community member, Vivian McKenzie serves on the board of directors for the Peekskill Business Improvement District, was an eight-year Girl Scout Troop leader, participates in the Peekskill High School Individualized Experience for Seniors program and is a member of Park Street AME Zion Church.

Former Peekskill City Council Member Donald Bennett, Jr. resigned after 10 years of service to the city, due to health reasons.
