‘Feather Your Nest’ at New Peekskill Business

Two local business women imagine customers browsing through their offerings of antique end tables, colorful ceramic birds, purses, tables, chandeliers, mirrors and more as birds looking for the twigs and leaves they needs to create their nest.

“Feathering a nest means making your home,” said co-owner Katherine Calderley, a Cortlandt Manor resident who grew up in Peekskill.

“We want this to be a shopping adventure for customers.”

Calderley and her business partner Robin Lolya opened their new aptly named store, Feather Your Nest, at 44 N. Division Street above last weekend, only two weeks after deciding to go into business. They heard the artist loft space became available and jumped at the opportunity with a quick decision to try out an idea they had never seriously discussed before. They sell all different kinds of items: vintage, antique, reproductions, salvageable items, jewelry and more.

“You’ll never know what you will find here because we don’t know what we are going to find on our shopping trips,” Calderley said.

On a warm, spring afternoon natural light filled the store, which is painted a crisp light purple and white. Interesting items like colorfully painted ceramic elephants, eggs, and birds are neatly displayed and well spaced on top of dressers, bookshelves and other furniture for sale. A Beatles album was playing in the background, which completed the welcoming and calming feel of the space.

Calderly has worked in the imports and décor business for many years and finds a wide variety of home goods from many different sources. She also rents a space in Coldspring’s Antique Center. Lolya, an Ossining resident, is a professional faux finisher and runs a business doing that.

The two became friends six years ago after meeting through mutual friends. Their personalities and tastes clicked and they have been best friends ever since. “We share a passion for retail, and buying and selling,” Calderley said. “And we complete each others’ visions.”

 “We wanted to combine our talents,” Lolya explained. “We creatively feed well off each other and we have fun together.”

They look at this business as an opportunity to provide something affordable to the community and work with the other downtown businesses.

“We want to fit in and enhance the community, not compete with anyone,” Calderey said.

Items range from $6 to $250, prices they say are more affordable than those found at big box home goods stores. Many items that would make great gifts or add an interesting talking piece to your home are between $10 and $20.

 “We are not here just to make money but to give the community a fun shopping experience and the opportunity to buy something nice but affordable for your home,” Calderley said.

“It’s like a nice treat,” Lolya said of home goods.

They were attracted to the Peekskill space because the rent was affordable and they enjoy the loft space. They are hoping to benefit from the busy festival and outdoor season approaching in downtown Peekskill and encourage people not to be shy. Walk up the steps and visit them. They have a sign in front at ground level indicating they are open for business and browsing.
