A Plea from the Paramount to Help Now

If You Enjoy the Paramount, Please Help Now!!! An Urgent Message from the Paramount Board of Directors

Dear Patrons, Friends and Lovers of the Paramount;

Due to cutbacks and the loss of traditional funding sources for non-profit institutions like the(PCA), we are in a position that requires a candid, direct and honest plea to those who over the years have enjoyed what has been presented at the historic Paramount Theatre in Peekskill.

For more than three decades, the PCA has provided our audiences and visitors with a diverse selection of live performances, high quality films and visual art exhibits that have been entertaining and enlightening. This has been possible because of the support of our patrons and the generosity of our members, government, certain arts organizations, businesses and corporate entities.

The Paramount's revenue comes in two ways...box office sales and contributions of various types. Regardless of how successful box office sales are it is the latter that makes the difference in whether or not the Paramount is successful. The fact is the PCA has experienced a severe drop in contributed income over the past two years which has necessitated an immediate $300,000 fund drive aimed at those who have the closest connection to what goes on at the Paramount theatre...our primary audience, friends and lovers of the Paramount.

With new leadership in place at the theatre for the better part of 9 months, our programming and film presentations have become more successful than they have been in many years. Our theatre operations have never been better and our dedicated staff and hard working enthusiastic volunteers carry out their varied responsibilities in a highly professional manner on a daily basis.

The Paramount budget has been cut to every extent possible zeroing in only on those expenses that are directly necessary for the organization to carry out its core mission.  In short, more contributed revenue is needed now if we are to continue to provide you with the Paramount experiences you love.

Please take a moment to provide the Paramount with a contribution to assist us in this vitally important fund drive. While buying tickets to one or more of our upcoming shows would be great, contributions to support the institution of the Paramount Center for the Arts is of "paramount" importance. Please stop by the theatre, or mail your contribution to the Paramount Center for the Arts, 1008 Brown St., Peekskill, NY 10566. The quickest, easiest and best way to contribute is to visit our website at www.paramountcenter.org where at the very top of our home page you will find a quick and easy link to make a secure online contribution.

Thank you for your consideration in helping us at this critical time and for your past support.

Sincerely,

Board of Directors

Paramount Center for the Arts

Dear Paramount Board of Directors,
Which part of "not for profit" were you not clear about? Time to call the Landmark Cinema group. A FOR PROFIT group, and let the Peekskill taxpayer off the hook. Time to compete with the Jacob Burns for the art movie crowd, without the nightmare of parking offered by the JB, as well as queuing up in their lobby, etc., and surely the Peekskill restauranteurs will join you in seeking a new audience. How about a new vision for the Paramount? Landmark has the same planning--cinema and live events, although it means some of you will have to give up your volunteer "power". As for the rest of Peekskill, they don't care.

I told Paramount people back in the early 90's to be a film museum/center lbefore Burns Center existed. I told them they could get school buses of kids all week long. Once Javits started that they had a long waiting list. The Paramount should have been the Burns Center. At least they have had some better shows. The need to get better shows still and charge more. No more bands from the 70's.

I have attended showings at the Paramount since childhood, saw many a movie there, as well as some current shows, and it still amazes and charms me when I attend. A few suggestions to salvage this graceful theater: sell it to a for -profit, the miniscule fee that the City charges pales in comparison to the amount of monies poured into it for heat, elec, maint, etc Next, do away with the Board of Directors, esp Vinny; he may be the problem,as most are tired of hearing his mouth anyway. A new Board may breathe life into programming, if the theater isnt/cant be sold. Have events at least 3-4 times a week, if not more. More people means more exposure, which means more people, which means more money, and so on. Why cant more "regular" movies be shown, as well as the classics. Open the venue to renters; I remember there used to be dance recitals at one time. Do they still do this? Last, make the events more conducive to the average citizen. The houghty-toughty events may make for good press, but are only good for a small minority of those that can afford to attend.

You are aware that the Jacob Burns is a non profit as well, right?

@ASHLEY TARR my comments that i posted did not contain profanity nor did they harrass or abuseRead More anyone, they were just what the forum is for, to discuss issues within our city. but i know, some people would consider it harrasment or would try to have it deleted because the truth hurts, and that's what some of our elected officials don't want you to hear, (the truth)

By the way, in our new system we have an update that includes a community moderation tool—it'sRead More not only Patch editors who can flag comments. What is it? Readers can flag any content they find objectionable on any Patch site at any time. We’ve put the flagging link in more places to make it easier to find and backed it with more sophisticated tools. Our goal is to recognize and reward readers who make our community great. How does it work? You’ll see these words — Flag as Inappropriate — on the top and bottom of Board posts, articles, blogs and notes, and next to every single comment anywhere on the site. To flag something, you simply click those words. What happens when you flag? It alerts us that something might be up with the content. When should you flag? We ask that you use your common sense and a general spirit of openness. You should never flag things that you simply disagree with and certainly not to clarify minor points. We encourage you to comment, post (or even start your own blog) to be heard on those things. You can review the Patch Terms of Use Ashley referred to above.

Unleashed dogs is getting to be a big problem in Peekskill. I see them routinely now. People areRead More letting their pit bulls out, their poodles, their chihuahuas - all kinds of dogs. Two days a go I watched a lady jogging on the track with her loose dog. The dog wasn't even supposed to be on the track no less loose. Some kid or elderly lady is going to get bit. Loose dogs also end up in more fights with other dogs.

Sue a sad fact that these days of “political correctness” individuals who exhibit rudeRead More and ignorant behavior are empowered by the rest of us. I know of a similar situation where the individuals will yell four letter words in the public areas with young children there, call others the foulest things, and in this case, they are black and gay so the race/gay card is used constantly. Until people make it known they are not going to tolerate their behavior it will not stop. Have you notified the property owner, complex board, and police, or maybe the board of health?

It seems Patch moves editors every year. Liz was here when I signed up. Then she was shortly movedRead More to Rye and Rasheed took over. He must have been here about a year and then he left when the new format was introduced. Both times patch started cooking and then it got cut down just as new staff got their mojo going. A new editor with a new format seems like starting from scratch again. I know AOL/Patch needs to get some cash flow going quick (from what I've read) but I can't see what they are trying to do exactly by tipping the cart over and over
Wendy Kelly June 17, 2013 at 08:37 am

Working Families Party endorsed candidate Mary Foster
Robin Seggs June 14, 2013 at 10:44 am
Working Families Party almost always cross endorses with Democrats. Looks like the choice isRead More getting clearer: One team is Democrat, WFP and Independent and the Catalina Team is Republican, Right-to-life, Conservative. Anyway, I believe Catalina is campaigning as anti-gay rights, so I know how I will be voting.
jo June 14, 2013 at 02:28 pm
