Walking for a Nuclear-Free World: Pilgrimage from Indian Point to Yankee Nuclear Plant in Vermont Commemorates Chernobyl Meltdown

Activists walked east on Route 202 from Peekskill to Yorktown yesterday, the first leg of a tri-state "peaceful pilgrimage for a nuclear free world." Today the motley group heads to Brewster and thence on north to Vermont.

Drumming, singing, waving, smiling, and displaying "nuclear free world" signage, a motley crew of activists walked about 15 miles from Peekskill to Yorktown along Route 202 Monday.

The peaceful bunch of Buddhists, Japanese activists, and American Greenpeace and social justice activists began the walk at Indian Point on Sunday. They plan to reach Yankee nuclear plant in Vermont by April 26, the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. They will have walked 206 miles in about two weeks by the end of their journey.

In the wake of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan, the peace walkers hope to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear energy call for eco-friendly alternatvies. They suggest solar, geo, and hydro power electricity. They are also walking in solidarity with those affected by the disaster and in an effort to close Indian Point and the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in Vermont.

Several members of the community from Green Yorktown and the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition joined the walkers for segments of their trip, thanking them for their 206 mile long dedication to their shared cause. Members of the group stayed with Yorktown residents overnight who gave them a shelter and food.

"I feel like it's a good cause," said Simone Kellett of Yorktown, who is hosting some of the peace walkers. "What happened in Japan is a tragedy. What happened there prompted me be a part of this."
