New York National Guard Holds Shooting Match at Camp Smith

Dozens of members of the New York Army and Air National Guard and the New York Guard and New York Naval Militia, as well as some from the Rhode Island Army National Guard, are gathering at Camp Smith in Cortlandt Manor for a shooting match this weekend.

"Participants in the match learn to improve their shooting skills and take those lessons back to the other soldiers in their units as trainers," officials said in a statement.

The event, which is in its 34th year, consists of individual and team competition. It's typically held at Camp Smith, no matter the weather.

"It's part of the competition," Lt. Col. Joe Martellaro said of Saturday's heat and last year's rain. "Most of these gentlemen have probably deployed, so the weather is really not a factor."
