Community Member: 'Give Some Respect to Our Veterans'

Monday's Veterans Day Ceremony in Cortlandt saw remarks from a slew of community members, elected officials and former service members.

Mixed between the musical selections were strong words in support of the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Montrose—which many believe could see reductions—and thanks for the sacrifices veterans make each day.

County legislator John Testa shared some statistics, including 20-percent of suicides in this county are veterans, and said it's "mind-boggling" that veterans have to fight for services.

Corporal Brendon Fitzgerald, a marine, talked about helping veterans transition back to civilian life and celebrating veterans more than once a year. He said the turnout at the event made him proud to have served.

"Veterans Day should be about the veterans, not about sales," said William "Willy" Nazario, chairman of the Cortlandt Hudson Valley Veterans Committee. "Give some respect to our veterans."
