Hen Hud Students Carry Out 20-Year Tradition

Youngsters from kindergarten to fifth grade spent their recess planting bulbs at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School Monday (Oct. 21), a tradition that's in its 20th year.

Students planted more than 4,000 bulbs. Several parent volunteers came out to help, including Sione Owen and Gina Ijeh. Both Owen and Ijeh have fifth-graders who look forward to the event every year.

"The kids love it because they feel like it's part of them," Principal Donna Torrisi said as she handed out bulbs, reminding the children to place them in the soil with the tip facing the sky.

Next year organizers may incorporate sustainable items, such as vegetables. Parents are also hoping local businesses will contribute with donations. The PTA chipped in $1,000 for materials this fall.

"There's room for more community dedication and outreach here," Owen said.

Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School is part of the Hendrick Hudson School District. It's located at 57 Trolley Road in Montrose.
