Cops Write 125 Speeding Tickets on Watch Hill Road

An ongoing speed enforcement detail by Westchester County Police on Watch Hill Road in Cortlandt has yielded 125 tickets so far, according to officials.

The effort, which authorities say was announced publicly before it kicked off, was launched in response to concerns from residents and town officials.

"The enforcement campaign was funded by the Cortlandt Town Board following community complaints about motorists driving at excessive speeds through the residential area," the county stated in a press release.

Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth said speeding in residential neighborhoods "creates a danger to other motorists, to people who are out jogging or walking, and to children who are playing or riding bicycles."

“The goal of this increased enforcement is to make Watch Hill Road safer for all who travel the road and live in the area," he said. The effort will continue through the summer.

County police officers look for speeders during their regular patrols, Longworth added. The goal, officials say, is to decrease the number of collisions and injuries, and to save lives.

"Watch Hill Road is a major through road in our community and periodically residents have asked our two Police Departments to increase their speed patrols on Watch Hill Road, which has two schools, and on other roads,"      Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi said. "This effort is now placed on Watch Hill Road in central Cortlandt, however, patrols at all times continue throughout the town. I agree with Commissioner Longworth; we need all motorists to slow down to prevent accidents and to protect our residents."
