Introduction to Capoeira Workshop

Developed by African slaves in Brazil during the 16th century, Capoeira was designed as a martial art that would be used to fight for freedom. The slaves disguised it as a dance to prevent their owners from discovering that they were training. It comprises one of the richest manifestations of Brazilian culture, incorporating elements of sport, music, martial art and dance into a game of physical dialogue and expression. One of the most important elements in Capoeira is the flow of energy, set by the rhythm of Brazilian and African instruments, always accompanying a Capoeira game. Capoeira gives it's practitioners many benefits, including coordination, balance, strength, body control and expression, flexibility, agility and most importantly - it's fun!

We invite everyone to come try it out for themselves and join us for an introductory Capoeira class with Professor Cabeção on Saturday September 14 from 2:15-3:00 pm at EMBARK at Energy Movement Center, 925 South Street, 1st Floor, Peekskill NY. The price is just $5, or free with registration for regular classes. Regular classes will be held starting on Septemeber 18th, Wednesdays 6:00-6:50 pm for kids and 8:00-9:00 pm for adults. Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared for some fun moves! Calls or e-mails to confirm attendance in advance are greatly appreciated (but not necessary).
