I concur with Leesther. Kept wondering why, in all the local papers/online yesterday, there was mention that surely Aspinall "might" win, and mention of "absentee" ballots. And today--by three votes, Presto!--Aspinall won due to a reporting error. So, was there any change in the budget vote?   more ›

Voices from the Vote: Early Turnout for the Lakeland Budget Is 'Light'

Between the raindrops, voters give the final word on a proposed $157 million spending plan

Lakeland school district residents turned out in small numbers through midday today to render judgment on a proposed $157 million budget and three vacancies on the board of education. Under gray skies, polls opened at 7 a.m. at the Van Cortlandtville Elementary School in Mohegan Lake and were scheduled, as rain fell intermittently, to remain open until 9 p.m. Besides the budget and board races, voters were being asked to approve a million-dollar bond to buy 13 new school buses. Kathy DeMaio, the district clerk, described turnout through the morning hours as "very light." A snapshot sampling of a handful of early voters found that with varying degrees of enthusiasm most of favored the budget.  "Like most taxpayers, I’d like to see the tax …

Voices from the Vote: Hendrick Hudson School District

Some voters support the budget for the sake of their children's education; others found it confusing.

Residents of the Cortlandt area came out to Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School on Tuesday to vote on the Hendrick Hudson School District's budget for 2012-2013. Several voters said they were voting to approve the budget because it is the best thing for the children. A couple of voters at the polls around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday said found the budget confusing and are happy that the district will have a new Superintendent now that Dr. Daniel McCann is retiring.   If approved, the budget of $70 million would raise taxes by 1.72 percent for Cortlandt residents, and would decrease taxes by about 1.66 percent for Peekskill residents. A $420,000 Cortlandt home, assessed at about $7,700, for example, would face a $106 increase in school taxes for 2012-…

Hen Hud Reaches Tentative Agreement with Teachers Union at the Final Hour; Teaching Positions Could be Restored

If the agreement is approved, six Hen Hud teaching positions that would have been cut next year would be restored.

Less than 12 hours before the public will go out to vote on the Hendrick Hudson School District 2012-2013 proposed budget, the district has announced that it has reached a tentative settlement agreement with the Hendrick Hudson Educational Association (HHEA), the union that represents the district's 234-person professional staff. If the agreement is ratified by union members and the Board of Education, six full-time teaching positions that would have been cut for the 2012-2013 school year will be restored, according to a district press release (see below). The district also expects to restore three positions that were previously full-time as part time positions if the agreement is ratified. The $70 million 2012-2013 budget proposal that …

The district had said if the union takes a zero they would definitely be able to restore tier two and maybe some of tier one. Tier 2 (level 2) cuts would have eliminated six teachers and one administrator and Tier 1 cuts would eliminate 11 teachers, 12 teacher aides and 3 custodians. So it sounds like the six saved jobs are the tier 2 jobs. Awaiting more information if the district releases it. …   more ›

"It's something everyone of all ages can do and it's a healthy thing to do." Participants in the event were young kids, community members, school teachers and principals, among others.
