Will Provident Bank be removing their name and sponsorship once the indictments start?

The LEAP program is a truly wonderful staple of the middle school culture. It affords students the…Read More opportunity to receive extra academic support in the areas of ELA, Math, Science and/or Social Studies, as well as gives them the chance to experience enrichment classes ranging in everything from working in the middle school sustainable garden, designing technology as young engineers, practicing the art of yoga, working with local police in a youth police program, and learning mediation skills as Peekskill Peacemakers, to name a few. The program has additional literacy support classes for developing readers as well.
All in all, hundreds of students benefit from this one-entirely-grant-funded program. I hope for the sake of the students who enjoy the program and for the teachers and administrators who work to make it successful, the grant is renewed by the state and awarded back to the middle school.

I agree with Jo. Lets take the plan right out of the Yonkers playbook. They seem to cry every year…Read More about having to cut programs when state and federal funding gets slashed. The point I do get Jo is that the tax money was already paid, its noble to think that our tax money will go to the students in our district but sadly its most likely not. I appreciate what teachers do, in fact I think their salaries are justified. Its not easy to teach in an inner urban district. Drive around the high school after dismissal and well, I don't need to say more. Success in education comes from support and discipline at home and nothing I see says that there's all that much happening. Where I work, I never see the amount of police cars around their high school like I do in Peekskill.

I've heard great things about the LEAP program. WIth the lack of other academic enrichment in the…Read More schools, programs like this are necessary for this kids who need more than what the schools can give in the class. Theater and music do provide this. Theater is a subject of the English Language Arts (think Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams). Reading and interpretation of what is read is required. Music goes very well with math, especially when reading music is involved because there are notes to be understand and counted out (whole notes, quartes, etcetera).
It says here that Mr. Urbanowicz said the district needed to reach out to its representatives on the state Legislature and plead with them to help get the funding restored. Did or did not the District actually reach out to Mr. Ball and Ms. Galef, or are they just realizing that they needed to do that? Is there a plan B in place if this grant doesn't go through? If not, there should've been.
Programs like this, especially those that involve academic enrichment, are always going to be the first to go. Since gifted education is not mandated by the state of New York, any child that is above grade level is not going to get what he or she needs, either in class or in after school programs unless the school district is wealthy or has lots of grant money coming in.

You can figure it out. Take a ride through the park on any given day and count the kids you see…Read More playing baseball (usually 0). Then count the kids you see playing soccer (between the tennis courts near administration building and Torphy field its usually 25-75 kids). With the elemnetary schools going from 11% to 65% Hispanic in ten years many of Peekskill's parents aren't from America (or even legal immigrants) and could not care less about getting their kids in Little League. Its the same reason the 4th of July parade is dead and election turnouts are miniscule

Congratulations to the Be First Boxing Team! Love to see/hear of Peekskill athletes returning to…Read More competition in the Golden Gloves; so much history and an experience that these young men will remember forever. The sport helped me focus, find calm and quiet at challenging times, instilled structure and discipline, and last but not least, a humble self esteem. Very true! Months back, I started noticing a change in my son’s character. He was growing to…Read More be practically scared of everything around him. I later learned that he was developing a sense of phobia and inferiority complex in him that he was too weak to defend himself from his schoolmates who found it interesting to bully him physically and mentally. I grew worried about this and desperately looked around for a solution. That is when I happened to hear about Classical Martial Arts Centre in Toronto. After having enrolled at the Classical Martial Arts Centre, my son has never been the same. He is confident and mentally strong now. He is focused and is doing pretty well in his academics. He now knows how to defend himself and is no longer scared of anything around him. The meditation classes that he attended there have worked out for the best. Certainly, karate can boost the confidence level in children!

Absolutely nothing. Thomas' comment does not offer a contrary opinion, or even a knowledgeable…Read More critique of martial arts; instead, he represents another stellar example of the thorough mind scouring that the American Taliban (i.e. the Christian Right) has perpetrated on a vast segment of contemporary American society.
Someday Thomas may read a book other than the Bible, perhaps he'll discover some of the fine Christian thinkers such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, or consider the historical crimes perpetrated upon indigenous peoples in the name of J.C., or maybe one day his conscience will simply and miraculously alight to the realization that he's been utterly, thoroughly and completely wrong in his world view.
But until that day comes, he's entitled to his opinion, as am I.

I have not felt a bit of "outrage" over this but I have felt disappointment. Nothing more, nothing less. But hey, he didn't sue me under false pretenses like he did to so many that he couldn't even recall them all when Oprah asked him about them.
I remember youngsters wearing those bracelets and being proud to wear them. Proud of Lance and all he had overcome and proud of the country he represented. It's disappointing to hear the truth, no matter how obvious and unrealistic it may have been.
