Should Small Fireworks Be Legalized? [POLL]

Unlike New York, Michigan lifted its ban on some small fireworks.

Under Michigan's new Fireworks Safety Act, devices like bottle rockets, roman candles and firecrackers can now be sold and used in the state.

In New York, all consumer fireworks are still banned. The state legislature passed a bill allowing sparklers, but it was vetoed in September by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Michigan's new law had not been met with universal approval.

Since the law went into effect, many have apparently been setting off fireworks in their backyards for any and all reasons—and their neighbors in Rochester Hills are sounding off about the constant noise on the Rochester Patch Facebook page.

Many Michigan communities responded by restricting fireworks locally. Birmingham, for example, passed a new law

Should the New York lawmakers try again? Take our poll and tell us why in the comments.

Legalization of fireworks cannot contribute anything beneficial to society and can certainly cause problems. Even sparklers, which are universally thought to be harmless can obtain temperatures of 1000 degrees. Bottle rockets, fire crackers and assorted consumer fireworks can all cause burns, injuries and fires. Why would we want to take on this problem?

I have a hard time supporting laws so flagrantly violated...breeds disrespect for all laws including more important laws. Better to have laws that reflect majority will to follow without huge police effort. Two cents. We are turning into a nation of laws against darn near everything people can dream up.

Hi, do you drive a car? if so you are taking about the same risk. Do you smoke? Do you drink? Were you once an adolescent? Do you like to have fun? Do you drive a motorcycle? Do you ever take risks? If you answered no to all of the above I am truly sorry for you.

Let's, just for a change of pace look at this proposal logically. First, the disadvantages of fireworks: 1. 9,000 people require medical treatment for injuries caused by fireworks each year. 2. 3,000 of those people are children, under the age of 15. 3. More than half of those injuries are caused by bottle rockets, roman candles and sparklers, all of which would be considered, "Consumer Fireworks". Now the advantages: 1. Making noise and watching bright objects can be fun for some people. According to my calculations, this is a bad idea, however, feel free to add to either list.
