Lakeland (5-8) and (10-3) got together in a rematch of the 2007 and '09 Section 1 Class A championship games, both won by Peekskill, on Jan. 27 at the John Devins Gymnasium at PHS.

Through three quarters the Hornets were within 10 points of the Red Devils but Peekskill outscored the Hornets 20-11 in the final quarter to pull away for a 64-45 boys basketball triumph.

Leading the Red Devils were Chandler Pierce and Dan Casey with 16 points and 15 points respectively.

The Hornets were led by Dan Eremita, who showed the fans at PHS that he isn't only a football star but can excel at hoops as well, as he dazzled the crowd with a game-high 26 points.

Speaking of dazzling, it was Pierce with two powerful breakaway slam-dunks, one with 6:15 remaining in the game and the other with 3:03 left in the final quarter, that sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy and put an exclamation point on the victory.

A key loss for the Hornets was Matt Tartaglia, who was out of the game due to injury though was on hand to keep the Lakeland scorebook.

While that showed a great attitude on his part, hopefullly for Hornet fans and just hoop fans in general, he will be able to return soon to the lineup, especially with big games Feb. 4 and 9 against sister school Walter Panas on the horizon.

JV hoops

Before the varsity matchup, Peekskill and Lakeland also got together for a JV boys contest, with the Red Devils winning 60-53.

Leading Peekskill to the win were 15 points by Jay Cabel and 13 points from Julian Culthberson.

Lakeland was paced by 15 points from Michael Morelli and 10 points by Seth Marks.

Coaches vs. Cancer

It's always good to see two local teams play against each other, especially when it's a game involving a good cause.

That was the case when Walter Panas traveled to Croton-Harmon to play a boys basketball contest in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic Jan. 27, which was part of a tripleheader.

Led by a well-balanced attack that saw four players in double figures, Croton-Harmon defeated Panas 60-48.

Making up the bulk of that attack was Aaron Thompson (15 points), Wes Turner (12), Rob Simmons (10) and Ian Thom (10).

The Panthers were led by Vaughn Dweck's 22 points and Jimmy Jackson's 13 points.

Nine of Dweck's points came courtesy of three hoops from downtown.
