Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch Weekly Sports Report

Sailors' Sherman explodes; Panas wins title; locals to square off in softball

Sherman explodes for Sailors

Hendrick Hudson’s girls lacrosse squad is enjoying a winning season so far with a 5-4 record and one of the reasons is the play of sophomore midfielder Kennedy Sherman.

Sherman exploded for a game high five goals and also dished out two assists in the Sailors’ 13-10 triumph against visiting Carmel on April 19.

“It feels really good to have a winning record at this point of the year,” Sherman said. “It felt good to beat Beacon (a 14-1 win) to get to .500 and now to go over that with the win against Carmel is even better.”

Carmel looked like it was going to come out with the win in the beginning as it led at halftime 7-6.

“The first half we got off to a slow start, I wasn’t involved that much,” Sherman said. “Then the second half our defense definitely picked it up. We got off to a good start in the second half.”

Hen Hud was able to get over the .500 mark by outscoring Carmel 7-3 in the second half.

“We always get off to slow starts,” Sherman said. “Our coach (Mary Montesarchio) told us that we have to want this more and then we picked it up in the second half. We were more talkative, our goalie (Kelsey Rosenblum, 12 saves) was pumping us up. She did great a job in the second half, she saved us a lot.”

Having a coach like Montesarchio, a former Lakeland/Panas honorable mention All-American and 2005 Walter Panas graduate, who can motivate a team is important, according to Sherman.

“I like playing for her,” Sherman said. “She is teaching us a lot of new things. She really puts a lot of time and effort into our team. She is helping us a lot. She really is committed to our team. It’s real good to have her as a coach.”

Helping Sherman in the win against Carmel was Angela Marriott and Bailey Stewart, who each recorded three goals.

“Angela Marriott, she gets the ball up the field when we are transferring from defense to offense and Bailey Stewart is really strong on attack,” Sherman said. “She puts in a few goals each game.”

Hen Hud will look to continue its solid play when it travels to Brewster at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 25.

“We need to get off to a better start then we have in the past few games,” Sherman said. “We know it’s going to be a tough game so we know we need a good start and just do the best that we can.”

Panas takes title

Walter Panas (5-2) continued its fine season on the diamond when it defeated Ossining 6-2 in the championship game of the Hendrick Hudson baseball tournament on April 20.

Tournament MVP Miguel Arroyo went the distance in the victory as he threw a six-hitter while striking out seven.

“Miggy is our ace,” Panas coach Anthony Fata said. “Every time he is on the hill, just like Brandon (Cohall), I know these guys are going to do what I ask them to do and that’s to throw strikes, work ahead, limit their walks and keep us in ballgames.”

Fata said he was pleased with his offense but feels it needs to continue to improve.

“Yesterday, our bats kind of woke up a little bit,” Fata said. “They are still not where I think they should be but when you can get Miggy a five-spot in the second inning, that is usually a recipe for success.”

Panas lead-off hitter Jeremy Guerrero led the Panas offense with four hits.

“Jeremy is a little fire plug,” Fata said. “If Jeremy is going, we are going. He’s the reason why I have him hitting one because if he gets on base with his speed, then everybody else seems to follow.”

While Guerrero led the way, Fata pointed out to others who made some key contributions to the Panas’ win.

“(Kevin) Reynoso, even though he didn’t have a hit, knocked in a couple of big runs, Carmine (Gentile) knocked in a two-run, two-out double which was big for us,” Fata said. “Tom (Dinnen) continues to hit. Throughout our lineup, we were consistent which is good.”

Softball

Those looking for a good local softball game, it doesn’t get much better than at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 when Hendrick Hudson hosts Walter Panas.

The Sailors are coming off a season where they were a Section 1 Class A finalist while Walter Panas enjoyed a breakout season in 2010, which included a playoff victory.
