Peekskill hoops turkey shootout

The Peekskill recreation department held its annual Thanksgiving Foul Shooting Contest on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Peekskill Middle School.
A total of 80 contestants polished up their skills in the hope of coming away with a turkey and bragging that they are this year’s champion. A 10-12 lb. turkey is awarded to the male and female winner in each age group. The following were this year’s free throw champs:

Boys 8-10 year old group: Shane Mapp had a tie breaker shootout with Joshua McCrae
Girls 8-10 year old group: Francesca Snipes
Boys 11-13 year old group: Tom Lin
Girls 11-13 year old group: Nyrie Holliman had a shoot out with Lanay Rodney
Boys 14-17 year old group: Kyle Glickert out lasted his brother Codi in a tie breaker
Girls 14-17 year old group: Aubrey Dabbs
Boys 18-25 year old group: Jonathan Robinson won for the second year
Boys 26 & up: Paul Piliero defeated Keith Staton in the best match of the day. In the first round, Piliero & Staton each registered 8.
The second round Piliero led off with 4 out of 5 while Staton had a chance to win it but rimmed his last shot going 4 out of 5 as well. The third round, Piliero as perfect with a 5 for 5 effort.
With the pressure on, Staton calmly sank his 5 shots to force another round. Then in the fourth round, Piliero still kept the pressure on with 3 for 3 shots made. Staton sank his first one but missed the second giving Piliero the turkey.
Girls 26 & up: Evo Glickert won with a 7-10 showing.
Notes:
This is the most participants we have had in the past couple of years. The 8-10 year old boys group had 24 contestants while the 26 and up men’s group had 16. Paul Piliero regained his champion status after losing out in a tie breaker last year. Each year, the Glickert family usually comes away with a turkey or two.
Local track stars head to nationals
The below was submitted by Westchester Striders coach Ted Bitter:
The New York Starz and Westchester Striders, two local track clubs, qualified six young athletes to perform in the prestigious USATF National Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in December.
The following is a list of the athletes who are going to the U. S. nationals:
London Claxton Peekskill
Nolan Defreitas Peekskill
Lauren Aviles Cortlandt Manor
Nina Acevedo Peekskill
Chelsie Ogindo Peekskill
Kunal Shah. Cortllandt Manor
The qualifying meet was conducted in Queensbury on Nov. 20.
