Welcome to Patch's daily snapshot of sports in Peekskill and Cortlandt.

Senior Day

Before their final-regular season home game on May 18 against Clarkstown North, Hendrick Hudson honored softball seniors Victoria Dolan, Amanda Bell, Amanda Gaudinier, Kristen Velez and Julie Gaspar.

"These seniors meant a lot to the program," Hendrick Hudson coach Kurt Thomas said. "It's been nice to watch them perform at a high level, starting where they were as freshman all the way up to as seniors and see how much they progressed. It was fun to watch."

As for the game itself, Clarkstown North came up on top 4-1.

The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second before the Sailors (13-7) cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Gaspar led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a one-out double by Velez before scoring on a base hit by Amy Glashoff.

Clarkstown North extended the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Next up for the Sailors will be the upcoming sectionals, which will start toward the end of this week. Hen Hud advanced to the semifinals last season and made it to the finals in 2010.

"Heading into the sectionals with a loss, you have to have a short-term memory," Thomas said. "We have to forgot about what happened today and head into the sectionals with a clean slate."

Rebels Roll

MSG Varsity's Rob DiAntonio reported that No. 1 Lakeland/Panas (15-0-2) defeated No. 8 White Plains 19-7 in the quarterfinals of the Section 1 Class A Girls Lacrosse Tournament at Walter Panas High School on May 19.

Emma Bozek (5G, 1A), Molly Fitzpatrick (5G, 1A), Alexa Bonnes (4G, 1A), Amanda Vasta (2G),Chyna Hill (1G), Taylor Scialdone (1G, 1A), Kate Weldon (1G), Samantha Ressegue (1A), Gianna Bensaia (1A) and Amelia Lopez (five saves) all made it into the boxscore for veteran coach Sharon Sarsen's Rebels.

Sailor Lax

Girls

We thank Rich Montesarchio, coach's dad, in helping us compile the stats:

Mary Montesarchio, a 2005 Walter Panas graduate who once was a standout player for Sarsen before going on to enjoy more playing success at Sacred Heart University, has done a marvelous job in her two years coaching Hendrick Hudson.

On Saturday, the No. 2 Sailors (11-4-2) for the first time would host a Section 1 Class C quarterfinal contest but fell short to No. 7 Byram Hills 11-7.

"We came out strong," Montesarchio said. "We were tied at 2-2 but then we dug ourselves a hole and by the time we got out of it, it was too late."

Leading the Sailors was the first 100-goal scorer on the girls side in school history Kennedy Sherman (3G, 1A), followed by Bailey Stewart (2G, 1A), Amber Feminella (1G, 1A) and Angela Marriott (1A).

Hannah Melomo made eight saves in goal for the Sailors, who have a bright future.

"We have a lot of juniors and freshman coming back, which make up the corp of our team and a junior goalie (Melomo)," Montesarchio said. "We should be good next year provided the girls do the work in the offseason."

Boys

No. 11 Hen Hud (8-9) traveled to No. 6 Keio in a Section 1 Class C opening-round game on May 18 and its experience showed in a 10-2 victory.

"We are just used to playing at a higher level than they are," Hendrick Hudson coach Craig Solomon said. "They did a lot of really good things but it's a second-year program. I just think the overall depth, top to bottom and the speed of the game gave us an advantage."

Leading the Sailors to the victory was Kevin McDermott, who was on fire as he produced seven goals and one assist with teammate Elliott Astor making 16 saves according to highschoolsports.net.
