With both teams coming into the stretch run of their seasons, (9-5) and host (9-6) played each other Feb. 1 in a key contest as each tried to better position itself to get a home game in the opening round of the sectionals.

In big games like this, star players show why they are stars and that is what Peekskill all-state guard and Hofstra-bound Asia Jackson did for the defending state Class A champions.

Jackson scored a game-high 18 points, 14 of them coming in the second half, to lead the Red Devils to a 53-37 triumph over the Sailors.

Shaina Iton and Lanay Rodney also contributed double figures to the victory by scoring 12 and 10 points respectively.

Meaghan Lynch led the Sailors with 12 points and was helped out by Kennedy Sherman's nine points and Cassidy Boyle's seven points.

Lynch and Sherman both tallied six points each in the final quarter as the Sailors cut a 39-22 Peekskill third-quarter lead to nine, 46-37, late in the fourth quarter.

However, Peekskill, led by Jackson's seven points in the fourth quarter, scored the game's final seven points to seal the win.

As for Peekskill, Mykala Greene had a strong game herself with 14 points with teammates Lisana Burnett and Nyrie Holliman scoring nine and eight points respectively.
