Day one had the Downstate team finish 2-1 in the first round of pool play to remain in the gold bracket. Losing one match in the third set 15-10 the second pool had Downstate facing the #1 seed Extreme Flare.

Facing a much taller team, Downstate relied on its defense and strong serving to defeat Extreme 25-20 and 25-19 and finish first in the second pool 3-0 to grab the first seed in the 8 team Gold bracket playoffs.

After defeating Caroga Lake 25-12 and 25-21 in the first round, Downstate had to face the Downstate 13 black team in the semi-finals. The 13's, playing up in this tournament, gave the 14's all they could handle in game one as the 14's won 25-21.

In game 2 the 14's got down to business and played a flawless game to win 25-8 and advance to the finals where they would once again meet the #1 seed Extreme Flare.

With a huge crowd cheering every point, the Downstate 14's would once again play great defense and rely on its steady serving to win the match and take the gold medal 25-16, 25-11.

All-Section Wrestling

Hendrick Hudson's Kevin McDermott (132 pounds), Phil Siegel (160) and Sean Barry (285) all enjoyed a great season on the mat and were rewarded for it as each was named all-section in Division 1.

States Suspended?

It isn't certain how many more New York State Public High School Athletic Association state tournaments will be held in the future.

That's because there has been talk about suspending state tournaments in all sports, for two years, because of financial reasons, beginning in the 2013-14 school year, according to Rich Thomaselli's fine work on MSG Varsity.
