Cardiac arrest is rare in children. But commotion cordis, which is caused by a blunt, non-penetrating blow to the heart can cause ventricular fibrillation leading to cardiac arrest, which can be fatal.

Defibrillation, administered by an automated external defibrillator (AED) can be instrumental in correcting a heart in fibrillation, saving a life.

Each year, Cortlandt EMS ‘loans’ a defibrillator to the league for the season; the ambulance corps provides ‘free’ cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training including the use of an automated external defibrillator. If you witness a cardiac arrest and a defibrillator is not readily available, begin chest compressions immediately and continue until additional help, and hopefully, a defibrillator is available.

The Cortlandt Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps provides emergency, pre-hospital patient care 24 hours a day, seven days a week to Cortlandt Ambulance District 1 and mutual aid assistance to neighboring districts, as well as standby ambulance service at community events, and through its community outreach program, prepares the community for emergency health situations through ‘free’ CPR and First Aid training, its File of Life and ICE initiatives and its Defibrillator Lend, Fall Prevention, Compression Champs and ‘Keeping the Beat’ (providing AEDs to community facilities) programs .
