Volunteers Spruce Up Hen Hud Schools

About 200 community members came out Saturday for the first ever district-wide cleanup day at Hendrick Hudson Schools.

Beth Gruber, community resource liaison for the district, called the event "hugely successful."

"Everyone was very energized by the difference they made in our schools," she said in an email. "Some people are already talking about doing it twice a year!"

The event lasted three hours. Volunteers planted, raked, trimmed and weeded at all five schools and the district office.

"Teams were led by clean-up captains Lisa Geotchius at Hendrick Hudson High School, Diane Swertfager at Blue Mountain Middle School, Donna Torrisi at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School, Andrea O’Malley at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School, Analia DelGiorgio at Furnace Woods School and Debby Marriott at the district office building," school leaders said in a press release.

Croton Country Gardens in Croton-on-Hudson, Sabellico Greenhouses in Hopewell Junction and Whispering Pine Garden Center in Mahopac donated mulch and plants. Wheelabrator, a waste management company, provided cold water bottles.

"Parents and students saw the immediate results of their hard work—our schools are now more welcoming than ever," the district said.
