High school teachers from Westchester and Putnam counties are inviting the public to see the work done by the high school science research students at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) at Sleepy Hollow High School on Saturday, March 10.
The public open house session is from 3 to 4 p.m. and the awards ceremony is from 7 to 9 p.m.
WESEF is the display of multi-year projects by high school science research students in Westchester and Putnam counties and is the regional version of the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, which is the larger and more global of the two Intel sponsored events.
From its humble beginning in 2001 where there were 50 students from 12 schools, WESEF has grown to more than 350 students from 30 schools this year.
"We have been fortunate to have had the majority of the expenses funded by Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Acorda Therapeutics and Entergy," said Michael Blueglass, Yorktown High School Science Research Director and WESEF President. "However, it would not exist without the tireless efforts of the high school research teachers from all of the public, private, and parochial schools in these counties."
The accomplishments of the students will be recognized with awards on Saturday. The top prizes are an all-expense paid trip to present the research at the International Sustainable Project Olympiad for projects involving Environment, Energy and Engineering (ISWEEEP) and at the "Olympics of Science Fairs," the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for projects from all category areas.
While WESEF is only open to the public from 3 to 4 p.m. during the poster presentations and 7 to 9 p.m. for the awards ceremony, officials are inviting school and district level administrators to tour WESEF. For more information, contact Michael Blueglass at firstname.lastname@example.org.
