"Readers are Leaders Day" at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School on Friday

Different community members and leaders will read to the students at various times throughout the day.

The National Education Association's Read Across America is on Friday, March 2, but students at are having their own "Readers Are Leaders Day" throughout the day.

The day promotes the importance of reading in our day-to-day lives, school officials said.

Different community members, including police officers, teachers, principals, army leaders will talk to kids about their jobs and read to students at various times throughout the day. Each community reader is assigned to a specific class to participate in the book sharing experience and discussion.

"We always want to promote reading and this is just a wonderful fit for promoting reading to all of our students and to also have our community members come in and really connect their community job and to attach it to reading, because without readers we wouldn't have leaders in our community," said school principal Karen Gagliardi.

New this year is an added focus on Dr. Seuss' birthday, which is on March 2. All the books read will be from his collection and the entire school staff is dressing as their favorite Seuss character. Another part of the day involves bookmark making sponsored by the PTA, Gagliardi said.
