Press release from the The Hendrick Hudson School District is pleased to announce voters approved the 2012-13 school district budget, bus proposition and bond to replace sections of roof at both Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary School and the high school.
The budget passed by 336 votes, with 820 yes votes and 484 no votes. The 2012-13 budget remained within the New York State Tax Cap, keeping the tax levy to a mandated 1.06%.
While the original budget called for the reduction of nearly 18 teachers, thanks to an 11th hour tentative settlement with the teachers’ union, if ratified by the membership and the Board of Education, six full-time teaching positions will be restored. The district also expects to restore three previously fulltime positions as part time positions through savings in operating costs.
“We are deeply gratified our community came out to support our budget,” remarked Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel McCann. “This budget reflected difficult choices but at its core preserved a majority of the programs and opportunities our students and community have come to expect from our school district.”
The District is also pleased with the positive result of the school bus proposition. Voters approved the purchase of a wheel chair van, two passenger vans and a suburban at a cost of $217,000. The proposition passed 764 to 490.
Voters also approved a $500,000 bond referendum to replace sections of roof at both Buchanan-Verplanck and the high school. The proposition passed 879 to 362.
Voters returned current Board of Education members Mary-Pat Briggi and Laurie Ryan to the Board of Education. Briggi will begin her third three-year term and Ryan her second three-year term on July 1, 2012.
