POP QUIZ: Are You Healthy?

See if your health class teacher was worth the school tax payments!

True or False:

  1. Stretching is for the amateurs.
  2. Your doctor should be involved in planning a new exercise routine for you.
  3. Push Ups are old school and don’t do anything for you anymore.
  4. Natural sugar is better for you than sweetener.
  5. Getting too much sleep is bad for you.
  6. Iceberg lettuce has no nutrional value.
  7. BMI stands for Body Muscle Index.
  8. Vegetarians are always thinner than meat eaters.
  9. Coffee at a young age can stunt your growth.
  10. You don’t have to worry about your cholesterol until your 50 or older.

So how do you think you did?  Here are the answers.
  1. False.  Stretching is for everyone.  Studies have shown that if you stretch before and after exercise, your chances of preventing an injury increase.  Stretching has shown to improve muscle soreness too.
  2. True.  The key word is “new”.  Anything you are doing to drastically change your day to day physical routine should be discussed with your doctor first.
  3. False.  Push-ups may have been around for a long time, but they have kept their longevity because they work, they are easy, and you don’t have to pay high gym dues to do them.  They can be done in your living room, your cubicle or your back yard.  They work the chest, core, arms and shoulders.
  4. False.  There is a lot of debate on this one.  The black and white you want to know?  the National Cancer Institute says that there is no scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use in the US cause cancer.  The other side of the coin, is that artificial sweeteners are very high in demand for those who are diabetic or have low sugar diets.   The other other side of that is calories.  People see artificial sweeteners are zero calories, so recipes sometimes make up for those calories with other higher fat or caloric ingredients.
  5. True on a long-term basis.  Habitually oversleeping has been linked to a host of medical problems like diabetes and heart disease.  (WebMd.com)
  6. True.  It is a big “zero”.  Sorry iceberg!  No vitamins.
  7. False.  BMI stands for Body Mass Index.
  8. False.  It’s what you eat, how you eat it, and how much physical activity you do.
  9. False.  However, the caffeine may cause issues with sleeping or anxiety.
  10. False.  Like any health risk, you should be aware of the conditions, risks and how they may pertain to you.

If some of these stumped you for a minute or two, let me know.  I can always set up a round 2.
