Press release from the City of Peekskill: As part of its strategy to boost economic development and employment opportunities in the region, the City of Peekskill is seeking qualified commercial/retail developers to redevelop approximately 12.7 acres of land on Lower South Street, adjacent to Route 9 and directly accessible by the Louisa Street exit.
“The Lower South Street Redevelopment Area is a once in a lifetime investment opportunity for a forward-thinking developer. This is a priority project for the City. This development will replace the old recycling facility and junk yard and create a destination center for businesses and stores. It will create employment opportunities for Peekskill residents, bring shoppers new the area and generate additional tax revenue,” said Peekskill Mayor Mary F. Foster.
The land is visible from the highly-travelled Route 9 corridor which recently underwent $73 million in capital improvements and is easily accessible from Louisa Street and Welcher Avenue exits, making it a prime commercial and retail location.
A request for qualifications (RFQ) was issued by the city this week, seeking qualified developers interested in the site, with responses due back no later than 11am on September 14, 2012.
The City, as part of its RFQ, is encouraging interested respondents to be innovative in their approach to the project so that it will complement the city’s Downtown, Waterfront and other business sectors.
“We are prepared to assist developers and investors to make this development project a reality. With an emphasis on attracting high quality national/regional retailers and the right commercial businesses, this will be an economic and employment boost to the entire region,” said James Slaughter, Peekskill’s Director of Economic Development.
