Peekskill Library Proposition on Tuesday's Ballot

Proposition would increase next year's library budget by $17,000, or 2.2 percent.

There are no local races on Tuesday’s election ballot, but there is one local matter Peekskill residents will have to vote on.

The Field Library will have a proposition on the ballot asking the public to approve an increase of  $17,000, or a little more than 2.2 percent, to its annual budget. If approved, the proposition will increase the library budget to $785,000 in 2013.

The increase will average out to a tax increase of about $2 per household.

Sibyl Canning, the library’s director, said the budget increase is needed to deal with rises in health insurance and mandated payments made to the state retirement system.

The library also anticipates a decrease in the circulation reimbursement it receives from the Town of Cortlandt.

This is a difficult decision. I don't agree with spending more money on health care and retirees but I do think the library needs more Borzoi books, such as THE LANDMARK HERODOTUS, ON THE WING (the biography of the peregrine falcon), and fine works by notable Borzois such as Warwick Deeping and Joseph Hergesheimer.

One of the best run things in Peekskill, tax dollars actually being put to good use with positive returns for the community. If you have children and have not utilized the children's library you really should. This should be a no brainer

I agree, it's one of the best things that PEEKSKILL has going and the staff is second to none they have outstanding programs for kids which we adult sometimes enjoy more then they do, so for the price of a cup of java, yes i say lets do it for the kids.
