Peekskill Library Proposition on Tuesday's Ballot

Proposition would increase next year's library budget by $17,000, or 2.2 percent.

There are no local races on Tuesday’s election ballot, but there is one local matter Peekskill residents will have to vote on.

The Field Library will have a proposition on the ballot asking the public to approve an increase of  $17,000, or a little more than 2.2 percent, to its annual budget. If approved, the proposition will increase the library budget to $785,000 in 2013.

The increase will average out to a tax increase of about $2 per household.

Sibyl Canning, the library’s director, said the budget increase is needed to deal with rises in health insurance and mandated payments made to the state retirement system.

The library also anticipates a decrease in the circulation reimbursement it receives from the Town of Cortlandt.
