Peekskill has hired Bernis Nelson for the position of corporation counsel. The City Manager selected Nelson after a lengthy search and the City Council approved the decision at Monday night’s special Committee of the Whole meeting.
Nelson has served as Peekskill’s city planner, then first-deputy corporation counsel before going into private practice. She has served as Newburgh’s corporation counsel since December of 2009. Nelson will start her new job in Peekskill on April 6.
“We interviewd about five or six candidates for the position, got it down to a top two and then (chose Nelson),” city manager Rick Finn said. Finn said they performed an extensive background check as well.
Peekskill’s former acting corporation counsel Janet Insardi is no longer working for the city. Insardi assumed that position in the summer of 2010 after the city’s corporation counsel Paul Schwerman was killed in a car crash on July 23, 2010. The city has been searching for a permanent replacement since August 2010.
One of the city’s former corporation counsels is providing legal advice to the city on an as-need basis until April 6.
