Officials to Talk Route 6 Improvements, Hear from Public

City of Peekskill officials will discuss preliminary plans for Route 6 (East Main Street) upgrades—which would occur between Hamilton Avenue and High Street—at a meeting Thursday (June 20) night.

Members of the planning department, along with design consultant Lochner Engineering, PC, will lead the presentation. The public is encouraged to attend and provide feedback on the plans. They call for design to continue through this year and construction to begin in 2014.

Here's how the city, in a press release, described the project:

"The plan, which was funded by a Federal Highway Administration grant, calls for landscaped 'bump-outs,' new pedestrian-scale trees, flowering plants, and shrubbery. Other proposed improvements include minor repairs to a stone wall on the north side of the street, decorative pavers adjacent to a portion of the sidewalk, a decorative railing on top of the wall with accent lighting, new street lamps to match downtown lighting, a curbed landing along the entire length of the wall (for pedestrian safety), and new handicapped ramps and crosswalks."

City planner Jean Friedman said there's a chance the plan could also include a new staircase and crosswalk opposite Charles Street. In the end, she said, the result will be a "more attractive, pleasant, and safe corridor" for community members, and those who travel through or visit Peekskill.
"The project’s goal is to improve the aesthetics in our eastern gateway,” Michael Welti, Peekskill’s new director of Planning and Development, said in a statement. “The plan includes important safety upgrades for vehicular and pedestrian traffic by utilizing a series of ‘traffic calming’ measures."

Officials are holding the meeting so property owners, residents, and business owners have "the opportunity to learn about the project, offer suggestions, and contribute to the design process."
It's set to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday (June 20) at the Nutrition Dining Room at the Peekskill Neighborhood Center (4 Nelson Avenue).
