Tonight: NRC to Hold Public Meeting/Discussion on Indian Point at Doubletree

NRC staff will discuss the agency's assessment of safety performance of Indian Point Nuclear Power plant.

The following is a press release from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission:

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will conduct a public meeting and open house on Thursday, May 17, regarding the agency’s annual assessment of safety performance for the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

The public meeting and open house will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, at 455 South Broadway in Tarrytown, N.Y.

During the open house, which begins at 6 p.m., members of the public will have an opportunity to talk on a one-on-one basis with NRC inspectors assigned to the plant and NRC managers about plant-related topics. Starting at 7 p.m., at the same location, the NRC will conduct a public meeting at which agency staff members will take questions from audience members.

Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., owns and operates , which is the site of two operating pressurized-water reactors and is located in Buchanan (Westchester County), N.Y.

Overall, Indian Point operated safely during 2011. At the conclusion of last year, as assessed by the NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process, there were no performance indicators for Indian Point Units 2 and 3 that were other than “Green” (very low risk) and no inspection findings that were “Greater than Green” (all findings were of very low safety significance). Therefore, for the rest of 2012, Indian Point Units 2 and 3 will receive the very detailed inspection regime used by the NRC for plants that are operating well. In 2011, the NRC devoted approximately 11,000 hours of inspection to the Indian Point facility.

“Throughout 2011, our inspectors kept close watch on safety performance at all 104 commercial power reactors operating in the United States. Indian Point Units 2 and 3 wereamong those that met our clearly defined performance criteria last year,” NRC Region I Administrator Bill Dean said. “In addition, our inspectors spent time in 2011 verifying that there were no immediate safety concerns at U.S. nuclear power plants following the March events at the Fukushima Daiichi facility in Japan. Those reviews indicated the plants remained safe for continued operation.”

The NRC utilizes a combination of color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start with “Green” and then increase to “White,” “Yellow” or “Red,” commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. The agency issues reports on performance at specific plants twice a year: during the mid-cycle, or mid-point, of the year, and at the conclusion of the year. Inspection findings and performance indicators are also updated on the NRC’s web site, www.nrc.gov, each quarter. Following the release of an annual assessment report every March, the NRC meets with the public in the vicinity of each plant to discuss the results. The meetings are in keeping with the agency’s commitment to transparency with regard to its activities.

The annual assessment for the Indian Point plant is available on the NRC web site here. The notice for the open house is available in the NRC’s Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under accession number ML12108A042. ADAMS is available here. Help in using ADAMS can be obtained via the NRC’s Public Document Room at 1-800-397-4209 or 301-415-4737, or by e-mail at PDR.Resource@NRC.GOV.

Routine inspections are carried out by NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the agency’s Region I Office in King of Prussia, Pa. Among the areas of performance at Indian Point to be inspected this year by NRC specialists are activities associated with proposed license renewal commitments for Indian Point Unit 2, the dry cask storage of spent nuclear fuel, emergency preparedness, radiological safety and activities associated with maintaining systems and components to ensure they are ready to perform their safety function.

Current performance information for Indian Point Unit 2 is available on the NRC web site here. Current performance information for Indian Point Unit 3 is available on the NRC web site here.

Don't believe a word of HVHC mission statement they tossed out the Meth Clinic since it carriesRead More negativity to the new and improved hospital.

It is dangerous and a menace to our already horrible traffic on 6. Thank God none of those kids gotRead More hit running in between cars looking for change. Traffic was backed up all through Mohegan...Poor choice of a way to raise monies for a good cause.

For all of you in support of a Meth Clinic I spoke to 4 police officer and 2 State Troopers that allRead More said not a good thing for any community. I wonder why?? to all the supporters. Look at that Renaissance Project in Ellenville Security Guard killed and nurse was almost stabbed to dealth with months of recovery in a hospital. Many said oh if it wasn't for a Meth Clinic I wouldn't have made it. Oh FYI many in treatment 10 plus years obviously it isn't working folks. In defense of Mr. Catalina I guess we need to ask Mary Foster exactly how much this Article 78 cost in full and sure we will have our answer. Atty fees are astronomical if I knew we could beat this I would pay my fair share in taxes for the future of Peekskill. Unfotunately I don't believe everyone is willing to do that in these tough econonic times.

I get that Mr. catalina blames the current mayor for this situation but This is what I dontRead More understand. He finishes by saying that as a Lawyer he would not support an appeal to the court decision. so what would he do? IF Mayor, what would catalina do about the clinic? i cant believe he wrote that much and never said what his plan to address the issue is.

Look who's talking : we have always said we wanted it to remain at HVHC why don't you call Mr.Read More Federspiel and ask him why he is dumping it in a undesirable area that will immensely affect the businesses, real estate, dangerous roads and community at large. You know as well as everyone else he doesn't want it there to tarnish his newly renovated beautiful complex. Ask him how much he is making off his other services. 200 K in the business world is a drop in the bucket. I bet you $10 all those patients that said I am going to contact he didn't even do so. So you are telling me this patients are law abiding citizens? Doubt it I know many people that have confided in me and said their sons, daughters, brother ,sisters have lied cheated stolen, and done time. Guess we will all see what happens in this community. Remember there are kids that will be walking to school. It is going to take one incident to wake up people.

The long suffering tax payer should look at it as them paying for their extravagant health care andRead More pension plans. As for lending a hand they have had our hand outs for way too long.

We've got the Constitution on our side. Although it is being eroded, we still have quite a largeRead More number of the population who still believes in it- 46,455 gun background checks per day since bama got in office- ( yes, we already do background checks for the majority of gun purchases)
Teleman May 19, 2013 at 04:57 pm
Let's face it- we can find niche studies to suit any position we take- but the justice departmentRead More study I am citing is a large piece that goes from 1993-2010- before, during and after the 1994 assault weapons ban -and it spans a pretty large time frame in which to draw these conslusions. This is a very comprehensive look at gun crime in the US- and it shows massive decline despite rising ownership. Deny all you want, because to continue your agenda, it's your only choice.
Abby Normal May 19, 2013 at 11:27 am
Tele, I keep hearing the mantra from the right saying more guns equal less crime. The truth howeverRead More flies in the face of this propaganda. A recent study actually shows that the highest homicide rates are in the states with the fewest gun controls. States like Louisiana, South Carolina, Mississippi and Alaska just to name a few. Sure, there are fewer homicides in Alaska than in New York, but adjusted for population, the per-ca-pita homicide rate is significantly lower in New York.

I stand by my statement- until these contracts are fully re-negotiated and the unions startRead More contributing to their benefits and taking zero % or minimal raises, the taxes will continue to increase year after year- Buchanan will no longer be the so-called "bargain" some claim it is.
Sick of the Lies May 10, 2013 at 10:04 am
Hey Fly, before you make comments, you should check the facts. The contracts are alive and well.Read More Mr. Donahue should try learning to read and checking the facts before sending his brilliant letters to the editor in for publishing. They are almost always entirely fictional....but perhaps he really believes what he says. Yeah, right. He intentionally makes up stories to sucker people like you into believing his nonsense.
Fly on the Wall May 10, 2013 at 02:47 am
All of those lucrative 2% contract raises have since expired! DUH. Unlike the 15% raises yourRead More glorious mayor has doled out with great regularity.
