Indian Point Sirens to Sound Wednesday Evening

Residents across the region will hear sirens during a test of the siren system at Indian Point Energy Center between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 14.

The sirens will sound at full-volume for approximately four minutes, and be audible in Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Westchester counties.

"Because this is only a test no response by the public is necessary during the siren sounding," states a press release from Entergy, the company that owns Indian Point.

Here's some additional information from the statement:

"Sirens are not a signal to evacuate. In an actual emergency the sirens would sound to alert the public to tune in to a local EAS radio or television station for important information and direction. These stations are listed in the emergency planning booklet mailed to households and businesses in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone around Indian Point. An electronic version of the booklet is posted on the Indian Point web site www.safesecurevital.com."
