A $42,000 grant is allowing 35 Peekskill teens to gain work experience this summer.
More than a dozen local businesses are participating in the summer youth employment program, which has been in existence for at least 15 years, according to Valerie Swan, executive director of the city's Youth Bureau.
Youths, ages 14 to 18, are paid at least minimum wage, $7.25 per hour, to work at places like Homestyle Bakery, Inn on the Hudson, Kathleen's Tea Room, Nana's Place Day Care and Westchester Community College. The goal is that the "economically-challenged" teens will gain or improve educational and vocational skills, as well as self-confidence, officials said.
The grant is from Westchester County Workforce Investment. It covers the cost of the program in its entirety, Swan told Patch.
