Furloughs Coming to Camp Smith in July

Nearly 50 civilian employees at Camp Smith in Cortlandt Manor will start furloughs, which will add up to 88 hours each, in July.

The furloughs are a result of "across-the-board federal budget cuts known as sequestration," Congresswoman Nita Lowey ((D—Westchester/Rockland) said in a statement. The 48 employees who will be furloughed are part of a larger group experiencing the temporary, unpaid leaves of work: 10,194 Department of Defense employees in New York State.

"Every day, the devastating effects of these senseless cuts on the Lower Hudson Valley become clearer and clearer,” Lowey said. “With the sequester already causing cuts to early childhood education programs and cutting-edge medical research, the furlough of 48 workers at Camp Smith is just the latest example of how these across-the-board budget cuts hurt the Lower Hudson Valley."

At Camp Smith, the furloughs will translate to an extra $130,000. They will start around July 8 and affect military technicians.

The economic impact associated with the the 10,194 New York workers is  $33,639,711, according to Lowey.

"Congress must reach an agreement to replace this mindless policy with a sensible and balanced approach that reins in long-term deficits while protecting our economy and critical services," the congresswoman said.
