Driving Unpaved Rt 53 Like "Slalom Skiing," Resident Said.

At least one resident is angry by the unfinished roadwork on Rt 53.

A resident who called himself only Paulie wrote to Patch and asked, “What the heck is going on?”

Paulie criticized the halted road work along Route 53/Grassy Plain.  “Rough surfaces, protruding manholes and valve covers sticking up make driving like slalom skiing.  The traffic light at Reservoir has been out of service and blinking for 5 days.  There's not a work crew in sight,” he wrote in dismay.

According to Andrew Morosky, Bethel Town Engineer, Route 53 is a state road and therefore subject to holdups that would not have effected town roads.  “It’s a State Highway project,” Morosky said, adding that the road had been ready for paving ten days ago.

“The schedule has shifted twice because of the weather,” he said. Morosky noted that the State has had to respond to weather related problems in other areas of the state that has kept them from completing the road work in Bethel.

As for the blinking traffic light at Reservoir Road, Morosky said, “That won’t be fixed until the road is paved.  They have to install the loop detector.”

The loop detector is the sensor that tells the traffic light when a car is waiting.  According to Morosky, the loop detector cannot be installed until the paving has been completed.  A groove will be cut in the road and the sensor wire will be laid within the road.

While the State Department of Transportation could not be reached to confirm,  Morosky said that the roadwork is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, August 1.

I guess I drive on Reservior Street because I have waited as far back as Sycamore Rd, near Bethelpage, to get out. The other issue is as I drive down rt53 the people riding bikes down the same road don't recognize the fact that it is not a safe road. I personally have alomst hit someone on a bike as they turned into the road to avoid something as I was turning out to avoid a man hole.

If we lived in Weston it would be different. They have been paving for weeks but then again Weston always gets everything they want...money talks and B.S.. I also agree, keep the light at reservoir and 53 blinking...much easier to deal with.

That's strange. The last time (which was Sunday evening) I went through that intersection (Resevior/Beach Streets) going north on Grassy Plain, there was traffic backed up to Cherry Lane. If you ask me, that stop sign/flashing red has made it worse. Just my observation.... There obviously was no work being done at that time.

Ok - tonight at 5:22 PM there was a line of three cars southbound and 5 cars northbound. When the light was "working" the cars would get backed up almost to the light on South Street. There were 3 cars on Reservoir - and at that time normally cars a backed up on Reservoir all the way to Vera Lane.
