Peekskill Board of Ed Talks Superintendent Separation Agreement

Outgoing Superintendent of Peekskill City Schools James Willis will receive six months' pay after he leaves the district, plus health insurance benefits, as long as he stays retired and unemployed.

That's according to a statement, posted on the district's website, concerning the separation agreement reached by the two parties. Willis announced he was retiring late last month. At that time the board did not release details of the deal, but said it was amicable.

Willis was slated to make $242,511—which includes his estimated  reimbursement for unused vacation days—next year, with the district paying an additional $72,000 for his benefits.

Here is the statement, as provided here:

The Board of Education would like to set the record straight and clarify any misinformation circulating regarding the separation settlement agreement between the Board and Superintendent of Schools, James Wills. Citing irreconcilable differences between both parties, it has been mutually determined that in the best interest of the district, the Board of Education and Mr. Willis have decided to terminate their working relationship effective July 13, 2013 when Mr. Willis will retire. Under the terms of the separation agreement, Mr. Willis will receive six months’ pay under his initial working agreement post resignation date. In addition, Mr. Willis will receive health insurance benefits as long as he remains retired and unemployed. Mr. Willis will not be entitled to any other monies or benefits.

As previously communicated, this was a mutual agreement between the Board of Education and Mr. Willis and the Board wishes him well with his retirement.

Our top priority is ensuring that we continue to provide the best academic instruction and support for our children as we are committed to their ongoing success. In the meantime, the Board of Education has had ongoing meetings in an effort to explore and research all options pertaining to an interim as well as a permanent superintendent for our district. We thank the community for your continued support and understanding and we will keep you informed as new information is available regarding the future leadership of our district.
