'Suspicious' Fire Leads to Arson Arrest

A 54-year-old Yorktown man is due in court Tuesday night to answer an arson charge after he set a family member's home on fire Monday afternoon, Yorktown police said.

Curtis Delano, Jr. was charged with third-degree arson, a felony.

Police said Delano, Jr. had intentionally started the fire at 2515 Garden Lane, where a family member – believed to be his mother – lived. The exact location of the woman when the fire was started is still under investigation, Yorktown police told Patch.

There was someone in the house at the time the fire broke out, but the person self-evacuated, according to Lake Mohegan Fire Chief Adam Cerrato.

More than 75 firefighters from Lake Mohegan and several other departments responded to the blaze around 1:35 p.m. By 3:30 p.m., it was knocked down and members of the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team were on the scene.

Further forensic investigation is pending.

Police said Delano, Jr. had told someone at a nearby business that he had intentionally started the fire. While enroute to the fire scene, Yorktown police received a call from the business and subsequently arrested Delano, Jr. at that location.

Delano, Jr. was remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections without bail. He is due in Yorktown Town Court on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 6 p.m.
