Troopers: Cortlandt Man Dials 911, Falsely Reports Break-In

A 23-year-old Cortlandt man is facing misdemeanor charges after he falsely reported a break-in to get back at his ex-girlfriend, officials say.

Troopers from the Cortlandt barracks responded around 8 p.m. Friday to a 911 dispatch to investigate an alleged break-in that had just occurred at a local residence, according to a statement from police. The complainant claimed that while he was home, his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend entered the house and damaged items in his bedroom.

"During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the alleged perpetrators were at a family function at the time of the reported break-in," officials said. "[The defendant] had fabricated the story, hoping to get back at his ex-girlfriend for a previous incident."

Police arrested the man Sunday and charged him with making a punishable false written statement and third-degree falsely reporting an incident, misdemeanors. He is due Monday in Cortlandt Justice Court.
